Movie Minutiae - Quit the Needless Steering Wheel Movement!

Johnny Betts Well, I think it's official. I have entirely way too much time on my hands. How do I know this? Because I'm writing a stupid article regarding my complaints as to how people drive cars on TV and in the movies. It's a legitimate complaint, but my bold attempt to tackle the issue most likely won't get us any closer to a cure for cancer. But neither will Tom Cruise's next acting performance, so maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself. *Somebody* had to address the issue, right?

Anyway, when you're watching a TV show or a movie, and there's a scene where two characters are in a car conversing, do you ever pay close attention to the driver? If not, then take a close look next time. Most of the time, the driver will have his hands in the Two O'clock-Ten O'clock Position, which is fine, but for some reason he'll be jerking the steering wheel violently from side to side. Seriously, if you took the steering wheel out of his hands he'd look like a white guy trying to dance at an office Christmas party.

Who drives a car like that? I'll tell you who - NOBODY! Your car would be moving from side-to-side in the lane as if you were Tara Reid driving after an all-night bender, and you'd get pulled over in no time. These actors are blue screen "driving" in a straight line, so there's no reason for them to be moving the steering wheel in such exaggerated movements. Sure, it's a minute point, but the genius is in the details, my friends. So Hollywood, here's a tip for you: KEEP THE STEERING WHEEL STILL!!!

See? I told you I have way too much time on my hands, but hey, it had to be said. Well, I guess it didn't *have* to be said, but if it ever does need to be said, then I wanted to be the first to say it. Thank you.
